Bowdoin Downs Southern Maine 8-3

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior right-hander Brandon Lopez (Amesbury, Mass.) scattered eight hits in a complete game effort as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears handed the 16th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies their third loss in the last four games by an 8-3 score Sunday afternoon at Pickard Field.  The game was the regular season finale for both clubs.

Southern Maine closes the year at 27-11 overall and will be the number three seed for the Little East Conference tournament that starts Wednesday.  Bowdoin, with its first win over Southern Maine since 2012, finishes the year 16-17.

Lopez surrendered just one earned run over nine innings and did not walk a batter to get his fourth win of the season against one loss.  He struck out four.

The Polar Bears 13-hit offense was paced by sophomore Connor Lee (Bedford, N.H.) who had two doubles, a single and three RBI.  Senior Sawyer Billings (Marblehead, Mass./Saint John's Prep) had a solo home run, a single, and scored twice.  Rookie Brendan O'Neil (Ponte Verde Beach, Fla./Bolles School) had a double, single and scored two runs.

Junior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) went 3 for 4 with a run scored for the Huskies.  Junior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had a double and single, and sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) had a pair of singles.  Sophomore Ryan Worthington (Narragansett, R.I./Avon Old Farms), the first of five USM hurlers used in the game, took the loss to even his record at 1-1.

Bowdoin jumped on Worthington in the third inning to score three times.  Sophomore Eric Mah (Newtonville, Mass./Newton North) walked with one out, moved to second when senior Joe Gentile (Groton, Mass./Groton School) was awarded first on catcher's interference, and scored on O'Neill's double.  Gentile and O'Neill came in to score when Lee doubled to left field.

The Polar Bears added four more runs in the fourth to expanded their lead to 7-0.  Mah brought home the first two markers with a double.  Mah stole third and came home on Gentile's sacrifice fly. O'Neill singled and scored the fourth run on Lee's second double.

Billings added the final Bowdoin run with his round tripper in the fifth inning.

Southern Maine finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning as Warren reached on catcher's interference, and sophomore Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) doubled to put runners at second and third.  Dexter brought Warren in with a bunt single, and Warren scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood).

Dexter scored the Huskies final run in the eighth when he doubled with one out and came across on a two-out infield error.

Southern Maine will open play in the LEC tournament Wednesday evening taking on fourth-seeded Rhode Island College (19-13, 8-6).  The teams split their regular season doubleheader at RIC on March 31.
