Four Huskies Receive All-Conference Accolades
Flaherty Named Coach of the Year

GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced today that University of Southern Maine freshman outfielder Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) has been named the Rookie of the Year for the 2017 season following voting by the conference's head coaches.

In addition, Hapworth was on of four USM players named to the all-conference team, and veteran head coach Ed Flaherty was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year for the ninth time since the LEC added baseball to its list of championship sports in 1997.

Hapworth, sophomore starting pitcher Dalton Rice (Waterford, Maine/Oxford Hills), and sophomore infielder/relief pitcher Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) were named to the all-conference first team, and sophomore outfielder Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) was voted to the all-conference second team.

The eighth USM player to be named LEC Rookie of the Year, Hapworth made a major impact on the Huskies' offense in his first season.  Hapworth finished first among all Little East players with 43 runs scored, a .735 slugging percentage and nine home runs.  The first-year outfielder finished tied for second with a .404 batting average as he collected 55 hits, 12 doubles, three triples and drove in 39 RBI while collecting 100 total bases during his rookie campaign.  Hapworth also accumulated a .475 on-base percentage.  Hapworth was named the LEC Rookie of the Week on two occasions, and the Player of the Week one time.

The coaches picked Dexter for a rare double by voting him the first team all-conference second baseman and relief pitcher.  At the plate, Dexter is batting .354 with six doubles, one home run and 22 RBI, and compiling a .947 fielding percentage.  On the mound, the second-year hurler has a 4-1 record with a 1.91 ERA and a single-season record-tying 11 saves.  Dexter was named the LEC Pitcher of the Week on April 24 after picking up a win and four saves in five appearances during the week of April 17-23.

The ace of the Huskies' starting rotation, Rice has fashioned a 6-1 record with a 3.49 ERA.  The right-hander has pitched a staff high 59.1 innings allowing 61 hits and 23 walks while striking out 71.  Rice was named the LEC Pitcher of the Week on April 10.

A transfer for the University of Maine, Quintal is batting .361 on the season, and shares the team lead with 13 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 25 RBI.  Quintal also leads the Huskies with 12 stolen bases.

Flaherty led the Huskies to a 12-2 LEC record and their 12th shared or outright regular-season title since 1997.  The veteran mentor has the Huskies ranked 20th in the nation and the third ranked team in the New England region.  Flaherty also had the home field at Southern Maine dedicated in his honor on April 30th.

Southern Maine, 31-10 overall, is headed to the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament for the 23rd time since 1987.  The Huskies are the second seed in the New York Regional and will play Castleton University in the first round on Thursday (2:30 p.m.).  The regional tournament is being played at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, N.Y.
