UMass Boston Knocks Off #21 Southern Maine 9-1
BOSTON -- Rookie left-hander Joey Rogers (Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehobeth) and junior right-hander Bryan Kaufman (Farmingdale, N.Y.) combined for a five-hitter as the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons knocked off the 21st-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-1, in a Little East Conference game Thursday afternoon at Monan Park.
The loss snapped the Huskies' 15-game winning streak and handed them their first LEC defeat. Southern Maine, ranked 21st in this week's ABCA Division III Coaches Poll, slips to 22-8 overall and 9-1 in the conference. UMass Boston, which earned a split of the teams two-game regular-season series, has won five in a row since losing 4-2 at USM on April 18 and improves to 22-9 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
Rogers went the first seven innings allowing the Huskies' lone run on a fourth-inning homer by rookie Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine). The southpaw, now 3-0 on the season, limited USM to just three hits and three walks while fanning three. Rogers did not allow a runner beyond second base other than Hapworth. Kaufman came on to pitch two scoreless innings.
Hapworth's ninth home run of the season coming with one out in the fourth inning gave USM a 1-0 lead, but the lead was short-lived as UMB struck back in the home half of the frame. Senior Luke Nagle's (Pembroke, Mass.) two-out single off of USM senior starter Tom Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) delivered senior Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass./Hopedale) with the tying run.
The Beacons took the lead for good in the fifth when junior pinch hitter Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) doubled to lead off the inning. Danielson moved up to third on a balk, and scored on a bunt single by junior Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn./North Haven).
The big blow in the game for the Beacons came in the sixth when sophomore Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) slammed a three-run homer to left field to make it 5-1.
Lopez scored in the seventh, coming home on a single by junior Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.), and the Beacons tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth inning against three USM relievers.
Lopez and Nagle led the Beacons' 13-hit attack with three hits apiece. Fowler had a pair of hits. Hapworth was USM's lone repeat hitter with his home run and a single.
Fortier was tagged with his first loss of the campaign and is now 3-1.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Keene State College in a Little East Conference doubleheader. UMass Boston will entertain Plymouth State University in another LEC twinbill on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
