Huskies Travel to Babson on Thursday

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) snapped a 3-3 tie with an RBI triple in the fifth inning and later scored on a passed ball as the University of Southern Maine Huskies went on to defeat the visiting Endicott College Gulls 7-3 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium

The win extends the Huskies' winning streak to 12 games, and improved their overall record to 19-7.  The win also avenged a loss in late March at the hands on the Gulls.  The Gulls dropped their second straight game to fall back to .500 at 14-14.

The Huskies built an early 3-0 lead picking up a single run in the second inning on sophomore Devin Warren's (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) RBI double, and two more in the third on a two-run single off the bat of rookie Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine).

Down 3-0 heading into the fifth inning, Gulls finally solved the offerings of USM sophomore starter Jack Donnelly (Walpole, Mass.) to score three runs.  Donnelly had allowed just one hit through the first four innings, and not allowed a runner past first base.

Rookie Ian Schmidt (Plymouth, Conn.) doubled with one out, and scored on a single by grad student Steve Morganelli (Milford, Mass.) to put the Gulls on the board.  A walk to freshman Joseph Deutsch (Fairfield, Conn.) and a single by junior Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) loaded the bases for grad student Anthony Serina (Portsmouth, R.I.).  Serina's infield grounder was thrown away for an error allowing two runs to score and tie the game.

The Huskies went to the bullpen for sophomore right-hander Dalton Rice (Waterford, Maine/Oxford Hills).  Rice got the Huskies out of the jam with a strikeout and a lineout.

In the home half of the inning, rookie Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) led off the frame with a walk and came all the way around on Quintal's triple to right-center field.  Quintal scored later on the passed ball.

USM added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth on a successful double steal and Olszak's two-out RBI single.

Rice would get the win, his third of the season, retiring all five batters he faced.  Sophomore Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) picked up his fifth save of the season going the final 1 1/3 innings.  Senior Eric Nagle (Manchester, Conn.), the second of three Endicott hurlers used in the game, was tagged with his first loss of the season.

Both teams had seven hits on the game. Hapworth continued his hot hitting for USM going 2 for 3 with two RBI  Duetsch, who had the first hit off Donnelly in the third inning, and Berno had two hits apiece for the Gulls.

Southern Maine hits the road tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) traveling to Babson College.  Endicott is off until Friday (2:00 p.m.) when it travels to Gordon College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.
