Southern Maine Blanks Bowdoin 6-0
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior left-hander Tyler Leavitt (North Andover, Mass.) and four relievers combined for a five-hit shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies blanked the Bowdoin College Polar Bears 6-0 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at the Colby College Baseball-Softball Complex.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 8-7. The Polar Bears, playing their first game in 12 days, fall to 6-9 overall. The game was played at Colby due to unplayable field conditions at both USM and Bowdoin.
Leavitt went the first five innings allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five. Leavitt was followed to the mound by senior Alex Tobey (South Berwick, Maine/Berwick Academy), sophomores Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine) and Matt Correale (Peabody, Mass.), and senior Zack Bean (Westbrook, Maine). Each pitched a scoreless inning.
Southern Maine took advantage of a pair of three-run innings, scoring three in the third and the same number in the sixth. In the third, senior Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) brought home the first run with a single. Rookie Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore Andrew Hiller (Bangor, Maine) made it 3-0 with an RBI single that scored Bender.
The Huskies to their lead in the sixth inning scoring three runs against a pair of Bowdoin hurlers. Hiller scored the first run coming home from third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Kip Richard's (Kennebunk, Maine) fielder's choice plated the second run, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of rookie Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) made it 6-0.
Bowdoin advanced a runner as far as third in the third and fourth innings against Leavitt, but was unable to push across a run.
Junior Nick Sadler (Atkinson, N.H./BB&N) and senior Evann Dumont-LaPoint (Kirkland, Quebec) had two hits apiece for the Polar Bears. Rookie Colby Lewis (Franklin, Mass.), the third of 10 Bowdoin pitchers used in the game, was tagged with the loss.
Southern Maine's game on Thursday against Salem State University has been moved to Friday and will be played at Salem State. Bowdoin will begin a three-game series with NESCAC foe Bates College on Friday. The series will be played at Colby.
