USM Falls to University of Chicago 9-5
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The University of Chicago Maroons outscored the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-3 over the final two innings to pull away for a 9-5 victory Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field #1.
The win was the third straight for the Maroons who finished their eight-game Florida swing with a 6-2 record and improved to 8-4 overall. The Huskies had their two-game winning streak stopped, falling to 6-4 overall with one game remaining in Florida.
Up 4-2 heading into the eighth inning, the Maroons scored twice on sophomore Max Brzostowski's (Woodridge, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) two-out, two-run homer off USM senior left-hander Tom Fortier (Falmouth, Maine).
USM matched the two runs in the home half on an outfield error after sophomore Andrew Hillier's (Bangor, Maine) single, and an RBI single from sophomore pinch hitter Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) to make it 6-4 going to the ninth.
The Maroons scored three times in the ninth, two coming home on a triple from sophomore Josh Parks (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian). Parks came home when rookie Payton Jancsy (Marblehead, Mass./Phillips Andover) followed with a single.
Rookie Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine), who went 3 for 4 at the plate, delivered a run for the Huskies with a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth, but that was all the Huskies could muster.
Jancsy and Brzostowski had three hits apiece for the Maroons. Brzostowski also scored two runs and had three RBI. Parks and senior Thomas Prescott (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) each had two hits.
UC freshman hurler Arno Curtis (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) picked up his first win going four shutout innings in relief allowing two hits while striking out four. USM junior starter Zack Bean (Westbrook, Maine), making his first start since 2015, was nicked for the loss. Bean allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. Fortier had a strong long-relief outing going 6.1 innings surrendering three runs on eight hits while striking out 12.
Southern Maine concludes its 11-game Florida trip on Monday (10:30 a.m.) taking on DePauw University at Chain O Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven. UChicago will play a three-game series next Saturday and Sunday against the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
