Dartmouth Downs Southern Maine in Florida 9-1

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Dartmouth College took advantage of three hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly to score four times in the first inning and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine 9-1 in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field.

The loss snapped the Huskies' two-game winning streak leaving them with a 4-3 overall record.  The Division One Big Green improved to 8-5 overall with their third win in the last four games.  The game featured the first-ever meeting between University of Maine alumni, USM head coach Ed Flaherty and Dartmouth skipper Bob Whalen.

With one out in the first, sophomore Matt Feinstein (Old Brookville, N.Y./Friends Academy) doubled, junior Dustin Shirley (Los Angles, Calif./Loyola) singled to put runners at the corners, and senior Michael Ketchmark (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) walked to load the bases.  Junior Kyle Holbrook (Broomfield, Colo.) delivered Feinstein and Shirley with a single, and sophomore Mike Brown (Pflugerville, Texas) followed with a double to score Ketchmark.  Junior Hayden Rappaport (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real) brought home Holbrook with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Dartmouth added a single run in the second on rookie Trevor Johnson's (Rye, N.Y./Brunswick School) double.

The Huskies scored their lone run of the game in the third after two were out.  Rookie Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) singled and later moved up to second on an error.  Sophomore Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) drove in Hapworth with a single.  Hapworth also made a big defensive play in the second inning throwing out Johnson at the plate after catching a fly ball to complete a double play.

The Big Green added two runs in the fourth on Feinstein's two-run double, and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.  Holbrook, who went 2 for 5 in the game, drove in his third run with a single in sixth.  Johnson plated the final run with a fielder's choice groundout in the seventh to score Rappaport.

Dartmouth's six pitchers combined to limit USM to six hits and two walks while striking out seven.  Senior Jackson Bubala (Chicago, Ill./Latin School of Chicago) got the win hurling three scoreless innings without giving up a hit.  Feinstein pace the offense going 3 for 5, including a double, and Holbrook, Brown and sophomore Nate Ostmo (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) had two hits apiece.

Rookie Riley Boivin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) got the start on the hill for the Huskies and was tagged with the loss.  Senior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) had the Huskies lone extra-base hit leading off the second inning with a double.

Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow (11:30 a.m.) taking on Worcester State University at Lake Myrtle Field #7.  Dartmouth begins a three-games series at the University of Central Florida tomorrow night (6:30 p.m.).
